Elie Tahari Spring / Summer 2014

With his Spring Summer 2014 collection, ELIE TAHARI celebrated 40 years in the Fashion industry with a presentation at his Fifth Avenue flagship. The entrance of the store was framed with trees made of white rope, wings, and trays of champagne. The space seemed to be filled with some sort of white tenting with cut outs that created inter connecting rooms. This type of unique decor made me wonder its significance. Luckily, I was able to have a quick chat with the woman who was responsible. She explained that one was meant to enter a forrest, walk into a nautilus wheel, and feel held in the spiral of life. I couldn't help but think that the spiral of life was quite possibly the best place to be well dressed...
Models were placed on pedestals all around the store with accompanying spotlights that made them seem slightly angelic. TAHARI'S show notes name the "architecture of Brasilia" as the collections' main inspiration with the "contrast of strong linear shapes against graceful curves". The color palette was mostly soft hues featuring just a few hints of color and the classic black. Think jumpsuits, laser cut leather, and a touch of chiffon. Other looks that were labeled "Edition 1974" were updates of some of the designers iconic styles.

The store was crowded and a bit humid, but being able to see the pieces up close and personal was totally worth it. Along with several wearable looks that need to be added to my wardrobe, the presentation included men's apparel in the back as well. Admittedly I don't have much interest in clothing produced for the opposite sex, but it certainly didn't hurt that the boys were extremely easy on the eyes.

White Out

This past summer, Citi Bike docking stations started popping up all around New York City. Well I happen to like bike riding and the occasional spin class, so I decided to give it a go. For this, I wore my most perfect white shirt dress from THAKOON'S SPRING / SUMMER 2013 runway show. This particular dress is the frock worn under a sweater in look 16. I think it looks better without the sweater.

I absolutely love white for the summer because it just feels so fresh and crisp. Shirt dresses can be tricky because often they lack shape, but this one features princess seaming and gathering around the waist. Conveniently, the bike came with a front basket that was perfect for holding my FENDI 2JOURS or any other sizable handbag I might be carrying. Now I wouldn't necessarily recommend wearing 5 inch heels to go for a bike ride, however my GUCCI PLATFORMS with 3 ankle straps looked so good with the frock, I just couldn't resist. The Iman sandal is from their Spring Summer 2010 collection and their acquisition is a story for another day...

Catherine Malandrino Spring / Summer 2014

CATHERINE MALANDRINO opted to present her Spring Summer 2014 as a viewing in lieu of a traditional runway show this year. The collection, entitled Les Voiles De Saint Tropez, was a nod to yacht season when the harbor fills with traditional and synthetic fabrics alike. If you were planning to head to the South of France next summer, MALANDRINO has already provided you with the perfect wardrobe.
For one hour, you were able to view an assortment of maxi skirts, perforated leather, and some very cool high waisted cotton pants. Upon closer inspection of some of the prints revealed themselves to be air planes and sail boats. How fitting. When I read the viewing was to take place at an address along the West Side Highway, I initially thought that it would be an odd location to host a Fashion show. That is until on Day 6 of New York Fashion Week I arrived at Pier 92 to learn that this is where the cruise ships dock to collect passengers and no doubt head off to some exotic locale. With the large vessels in the background, it was quite clear as to why Malandrino chose this spot. I myself was very tempted to take several outfits right off the models and set sail.

Malandrino herself was dressed in all black Parisian chic uniform with a red ankle boot. Amongst the Fashionable crowd, I managed to grab a few words with the designer. I asked which look was her favorite. She picked two; the waxy white leather peplum waist jacket with pleated loose cotton pants in ocean blue and the knotted cascade front blue and white striped maxi dress. Looks number 21 and 22.

Bon Voyage!
